ART CURRICULUM INTENT
 

Our Art curriculum aims to inspire creativity, curiosity and confidence, enabling every pupil to develop the knowledge, skills and independence needed to express ideas and communicate meaning through art. We want pupils to become thoughtful and adventurous young artists who are willing to observe carefully, experiment, take creative risks and refine their ideas.

Across Years 5 to 8, pupils build their knowledge and skills progressively through drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, photography and mixed media. They explore key artistic concepts including colour, texture, tone, pattern, form, composition, symbolism and visual communication, while learning from a diverse range of artists, designers and artistic traditions. 

Our curriculum encourages pupils to understand that art has a purpose beyond developing practical skills. Through themes including identity, culture, journeys, storytelling, the environment and visual communication, pupils discover how artists can share experiences, explore ideas, challenge perceptions and communicate messages about the world around them. 

As pupils progress, they are given increasing opportunities to investigate, experiment, evaluate and refine their work, culminating in more personal and independent responses. Our ambition is for every pupil to leave us with strong foundations in artistic knowledge and technique, an appreciation of art and culture, and, importantly, a personal artistic voice of their own.

DESIGN AND TECHNOLOGY CURRICULUM INTENT
 

Our Design & Technology curriculum aims to inspire creativity, curiosity and confidence, enabling every pupil to develop the knowledge, practical skills and independence needed to design and make purposeful products. We want pupils to become thoughtful and resourceful young designers who are willing to investigate, experiment, solve problems and refine their ideas.

Across Years 5 to 8, pupils progressively develop their knowledge and skills through construction, mechanisms, textiles, electronics and food technology. They learn about materials, structures, forces, movement, nutrition and systems, while developing increasing accuracy and confidence in the safe use of tools, equipment and practical techniques. 

Our curriculum encourages pupils to understand that successful design responds to a purpose, user and context. Pupils research existing products, develop and communicate ideas, make informed choices and consider factors including function, aesthetics, sustainability, health and safety. Testing, evaluating and refining are embedded throughout the design process. 

As pupils progress, they tackle increasingly complex design challenges and work with greater precision and independence, applying knowledge from previous learning to new situations. Our ambition is for every pupil to leave us with strong foundations in designing and making, the confidence to solve practical problems, and the ability to think critically and creatively about the designed world around them.
