Religious Education

Curriculum Intent – Religious Education

At Ryecroft C.E. Middle School, Religious Education is at the heart of our identity as a Church of England school. Our curriculum is rooted in Christian values and seeks to enable all pupils to explore, reflect and flourish, developing both academically and spiritually.

The principal aim of Religious Education at Ryecroft is to engage pupils in an enquiry-based approach, where they explore meaningful questions about belief, truth and human experience. Through carefully sequenced units, pupils consider theological concepts such as creation, incarnation, salvation and the nature of God, alongside study of a range of world religions and worldviews including Islam, Judaism and Buddhism.

Our curriculum reflects the Church of England’s vision for education, encouraging pupils to develop wisdom, hope, dignity and respect. Pupils are supported to understand Christianity as a living and diverse faith, while also learning about and from other religions and beliefs. This enables them to appreciate the richness of different cultures and develop respect for others within our local, national and global communities.

Across Years 5 to 8, pupils build both substantive knowledge (what people believe) and disciplinary understanding (how religion is studied). Through enquiry questions such as “Was Jesus the Messiah?”, “What does it mean to be a Muslim?” and “Does the world need prophets today?”, pupils are encouraged to think deeply, analyse different perspectives and form reasoned judgements.

At Ryecroft, we believe it is vital that pupils both learn about religion and learn from religion. They are encouraged to reflect on their own beliefs, values and experiences, developing their sense of identity and purpose. Opportunities for discussion, debate and reflection are integral, supporting pupils in becoming thoughtful, open-minded and respectful individuals.

Religious Education also plays a key role in pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. It provides a safe space for pupils to explore big questions about life, meaning and morality, and to consider how faith and belief influence actions and decisions in the modern world.

Our curriculum is enhanced through links to collective worship, the wider life of the school and opportunities to engage with faith and community. This ensures that Religious Education is not taught in isolation, but is woven through the ethos and daily life of the school.

By the end of Year 8, pupils have developed a secure understanding of Christianity and other major world religions, alongside the ability to think critically, reflect thoughtfully and engage respectfully with different beliefs, preparing them for life in a diverse and ever-changing world.
