CURRICULUM INTENT

All pupils at Ryecroft C.E. Middle School have the right to have rich, deep learning experiences that balance all the aspects of computing. With technology playing such a significant role in society today, we believe ‘Computational thinking’ is a skill children must be taught if they are to be able to participate effectively and safely in this digital world. A high-quality computing education equips pupils to use creativity to understand and change the world. Computing has deep links with Mathematics, Science and Design & Technology and provides insight into both natural and artificial systems. At Ryecroft the core of computing is Computer Science, allowing them to continually practice and improve the skills they learn. This ensures they become digitally literate, so that they are able to express themselves and develop their ideas through information and computer technology– at a level suitable for the future workplace and as active participants in a digital world.  We teach a curriculum that enables children to become effective users of technology who can: The skills outlined below are mapped across the key stages in a matrix, to ensure that all of the areas receive adequate coverage throughout the key stage. This is subject to review yearly, to ensure that the curriculum meets the needs of the learners.

The curriculum has been designed using the guidance from Computing at School's program of study document for Key Stages 2 and 3. This is guided by the National Curriculum statutory guidance and organises the curriculum into three distinct sections: The three assessment areas are visible on a display board in the classroom. The area being covered in that lesson is highlighted to students and is visible throughout the lesson. This means that students are aware of the context of the lesson and can appreciate and have an awareness of interleaving of skills.

The Computing curriculum at Ryecroft is designed to work closely alongside the PSHCE statutory guidance, in particular the new 2020 Relationships education, relationships and sex education (RSE) and health education. This new curriculum will be mandatory from September 2020 and so is being planned and worked on throughout this academic year for implementation next year.
