Curriculum Intent – Music
At Ryecroft CE Middle School, our Music curriculum is designed to be inclusive, engaging and ambitious, enabling every pupil to develop as a confident and expressive musician regardless of their starting point. We aim to nurture a lifelong appreciation of music by ensuring all pupils actively participate in a wide range of musical experiences.
Across Years 5 to 8, pupils build a secure foundation in music through a carefully sequenced curriculum that develops both practical skills and musical understanding. Learning is rooted in regular opportunities to perform, compose, listen and evaluate, ensuring that musical knowledge is embedded through meaningful application.
Our curriculum is structured around seven key strands, which are revisited and developed over time:
- Singing
- Playing instruments
- Improvising
- Composing
- Listening and appraising
- Notation
- Critical evaluation and wider musical understanding
Pupils experience a broad and diverse range of musical styles, genres and traditions. From Western classical music and Baroque traditions to African, Indian and popular music, the curriculum reflects both historical development and global diversity. This ensures pupils develop an understanding of music as a cultural and creative expression within a multicultural society.
Practical music-making is at the heart of our approach. Pupils develop confidence through singing, ensemble work and instrumental performance (including keyboard, ukulele, percussion and digital technologies), while also learning to compose and improvise using both traditional notation and modern software. Skills are carefully sequenced, for example, from basic notation and instrumental technique in Year 5 to more complex composition, improvisation and stylistic understanding by Year 8.
Assessment is rooted in authentic musical activity. Through performing, composing and listening, teachers make informed judgements that support pupils’ next steps, ensuring that musicality remains central rather than isolated written outcomes.
Our curriculum also supports pupils’ personal development. Opportunities for collaboration, creativity and performance build confidence, resilience and communication skills. Links to British values and wider cultural understanding are embedded throughout, preparing pupils to appreciate and contribute to the rich musical diversity of modern Britain.
By the end of Year 8, pupils are confident in performing, composing and evaluating music, with a secure understanding of musical elements and styles, and the ability to engage critically and creatively with music in a range of contexts.
