Curriculum Intent – French

At Ryecroft CE Middle School, our Modern Foreign Languages curriculum is designed to inspire and equip pupils to become confident, curious and capable linguists. We provide a strong foundation in French, enabling pupils to make clear and sustained progress in one language while developing the transferable skills needed to learn additional languages in the future.

Our curriculum is carefully sequenced from Years 5 to 8, building progressively from simple communication to more complex use of language. Pupils begin by learning key vocabulary and phonics, such as greetings, numbers and personal information, and develop towards expressing opinions, describing people and places, and using a range of tenses including present, near future and past.

Language learning at Ryecroft is rooted in the development of the four key skill areas:

These are taught and revisited regularly to ensure pupils gain both fluency and confidence. A strong emphasis is placed on phonics and pronunciation, enabling pupils to decode unfamiliar words and develop accurate spoken French.

Our curriculum is enriched through engaging and relevant topics, such as personal identity, school life, hobbies, travel and holidays, which allow pupils to communicate meaningfully about their own lives and the wider world. Pupils are encouraged to manipulate language, express opinions and justify their ideas, fostering independence and resilience in language learning.

We also place great importance on developing pupils’ understanding of culture and global awareness. Through the study of Francophone countries and cultures, pupils gain insight into the diversity of the French-speaking world and develop empathy and respect for others.

A key feature of our provision is the use of iPad technology to support and enhance language learning. Pupils use digital tools to practise vocabulary, pronunciation and grammar, record spoken work, access authentic materials and complete interactive tasks. This allows for immediate feedback, supports independent learning and increases engagement, enabling pupils to revisit and embed learning effectively.

Teaching is delivered by specialist staff who foster a supportive, inclusive environment where all pupils feel confident to take risks and participate. A range of resources, including authentic texts such as songs, videos and real-life materials, are used to bring the language to life and deepen cultural understanding.

Our curriculum is designed to be both challenging and enjoyable, ensuring that pupils of all abilities can succeed. Opportunities to celebrate achievement, perform and communicate for real purposes help to build confidence and motivation.

By the end of Year 8, pupils have a secure foundation in French, are able to communicate with increasing accuracy and confidence, and are well prepared to continue their language learning journey at Key Stage 3 and beyond.
