Curriculum Intent – Geography
At Ryecroft C.E. Middle School, our Geography curriculum is designed to develop curious, informed and responsible global citizens. We aim to equip pupils with the knowledge, skills and understanding to interpret the world around them and recognise their place within it.
Our curriculum provides a carefully sequenced journey from Years 5 to 8, enabling pupils to build a secure understanding of both physical and human geography. Through the study of diverse places, environments and processes, ranging from rivers and coasts to global development and sustainability, pupils develop a strong sense of place at local, national and global scales.
Learning is structured around enquiry-led questions which encourage pupils to think critically about real-world issues such as climate change, inequality, globalisation and environmental sustainability. Pupils regularly compare places (for example, the UK with regions such as South America, Canada or India), helping them to understand similarities, differences and interconnections across the world.
We place a strong emphasis on the development of disciplinary geographical skills, which are explicitly taught and revisited over time. These include:
- Map skills, including atlas use, grid references and scale
- Fieldwork and data collection, including enquiry, analysis and conclusions
- Interpretation of geographical data, including graphs, maps and satellite images
- Comparative and evaluative thinking, enabling pupils to form reasoned judgements
Pupils also develop a rich geographical vocabulary, allowing them to articulate their understanding with increasing precision.
Fieldwork is an essential part of our curriculum, providing opportunities for pupils to investigate their local environment and apply their knowledge in real contexts. This ensures learning is meaningful, memorable and rooted in experience.
By the end of Year 8, pupils are confident in analysing geographical issues, understanding the interaction between human and physical processes, and considering how their actions can contribute to a more sustainable future.
